Your calf holds a muscle called the soleus. It runs from just below your knee down to your heel, and it sits behind the bigger, flashier calf muscle you can see. Most people have never heard of it.
But the soleus has a talent that surprised even the researchers who found it.
When you contract this muscle (just raise your heels while sitting), it pulls glucose straight out of your blood. Not stored fuel from inside the muscle. Not glycogen. The actual sugar flooding your system right now, from the bowl of pasta you just put down.
In other words, your calf is a sponge for blood sugar. And nobody told us to squeeze it.
A 2022 study from the University of Houston found that seated calf raises (researchers called them “soleus pushups”) may reduce a post-meal blood sugar rise by up to 52%. Insulin demand dropped by 60%. The muscle kept burning fuel for hours, without fatigue. Every participant was sitting the entire time.
Here is the part that shook me. The soleus makes up about 1% of your body weight. That is all. But when you activate it, it may double or triple your whole body’s ability to burn carbohydrates after eating. All 600 muscles in your body together handle about 15% of post-meal glucose when you are sitting still. This one small calf muscle can push that number far higher, from your chair, with zero equipment.
So why does this muscle work differently from all the rest? Most muscles burn glycogen (stored sugar) when they contract. That is an inside job, and it does not pull much glucose from your blood. The soleus is different. It runs on a slow burn, pulling fuel directly from your bloodstream. So when it contracts after a meal, it is drinking the glucose that would otherwise spike you and crash your energy an hour later.
A follow-up study tested the same calf raises in people with prediabetes. Same direction. Approximately 32% lower glucose response, even without any lab coaching.
