The Pre-Load Hack
I drank a Coke on an empty stomach. Then I ate a handful of nuts and drank the same Coke. My glucose monitor told two very different stories.
I drank the Coke. My glucose monitor jumped 62 points in about 40 minutes. That sharp, fast spike is what a can of Coca-Cola does on an empty stomach. So I ran the test again two days later. This time I ate 15 almonds and waited 10 minutes before I opened the same can. The spike topped out at 35 points.
Same Coke, same body, same sensor on my arm. The only thing that changed was what came first.

Meanwhile... The Science

Here is what happened inside me. The almonds hit my stomach before the sugar did. Protein and fat slow down something called gastric emptying. In other words, they put a speed bump between your mouth and your bloodstream.
The sugar from that Coca-Cola still showed up. But it showed up slowly... like a line at the door instead of a flood through the gates. My body had time to respond. And that matters more than most people think.
That speed bump also woke up a hormone called GLP-1. You may have heard of it. It is the same hormone that Ozempic and Wegovy try to copy. Your body makes GLP-1 on its own when protein hits your gut before sugar does. GLP-1 tells your pancreas to get insulin ready at the right moment. It tells your stomach to keep slowing down. The result is a gentler rise, a lower peak, and no crash two hours later.
A 2019 review in Frontiers in Endocrinology looked at dozens of pre-load studies. They found that eating protein or fat before carbs may reduce the glucose peak by about 40 percent on average. One trial showed closer to 49 percent in people with type 2 diabetes. This is not a pill or a powder. It is just... timing.
My doctor never mentioned this. Nobody did. I found it on a glucose monitor and then I found the research to back it up.

⚡ Your mission this week
The 10-Minute Pre-Load
⏱ 5 days
Grab your protein
Almonds, string cheese, jerky, or a hard-boiled egg. About 15 grams of protein is the sweet spot.
| |
Eat it, then wait
Finish your protein snack and set a timer for 10 minutes. Let it reach your stomach first.
| |
Now drink your Coke
Have the soda, the juice, the sweet tea. The sugar has to wait in line now. Your stomach is already busy.
🎯 Your first win
Try it once before your next soda. One handful of almonds. One 10-minute pause. That is your first mission.
Do
Keep a small protein snack at your desk, in your car, or in your bag.
Wait 10 to 15 minutes between the protein and the sugary drink. The pause is the whole point.
Don’t
Skip the pause. Eating protein and carbs at the exact same time helps some, but eating protein first helps more.
Think you need a shake. A few almonds, a cheese stick, or a spoon of peanut butter does the job.

My friend Dana heard me talk about this and rolled her eyes. She drinks two Cokes a day and has for years. I told her to try almonds before just one of them. She texted me three days later. “I did not crash after lunch.” That was the whole message. No long speech, no miracle story. Just one fewer crash in her afternoon.
She still drinks her Coke. She just eats a handful of nuts first now. And that is what I love about this... nobody had to give up a thing.

Where this comes from: A 2019 Frontiers in Endocrinology review found that eating protein or vegetables before carbs may reduce the glucose peak by roughly 40%. A 2014 Diabetologia trial showed whey protein before a high-GI meal may lower the spike by about 30% while boosting GLP-1 release. Coca-Cola has a glycemic index of approximately 63 (University of Sydney GI Database). Individual responses vary. |

Your stomach has a speed limit. Protein enforces it.
