Issue No. 042 · The Fiber Hack

The spoon that shrank my toast spike

I drank one teaspoon of psyllium before breakfast. My glucose monitor showed a 17% smaller rise, and I ate every bite of toast.

I stirred fiber into water.

It was one rounded teaspoon of psyllium husk in a full glass. I drank it fifteen minutes before my favorite breakfast, two slices of white toast with strawberry jam.

On Monday, that toast and jam with no fiber raised my blood sugar 58 points. Two days later, after the fiber drink, the same breakfast raised it 48.

I kept everything else matched, from the bread brand to the coffee to the clock (7:30 a.m. both days).

That’s a 17% smaller spike… and I kept every bite of toast.

One person, two mornings, one glucose monitor. Your numbers may differ. This is not medical advice, so talk to your doctor before adding any supplement, especially if you take medication.

White toast is a fast carb. Your body breaks it into glucose within minutes, and the jam adds quick sugar on top.

Psyllium comes from the husk of a small seed, and it can soak up many times its own weight in water.

So when it reaches your gut, it turns into a thick, slow gel. That gel may slow how fast the sugar from your toast gets into your blood.

In other words, the sugar still gets in, just at a walk instead of a sprint.

A 23-Year Pharmaceutical Insider Finally Said It On Camera

A man who spent twenty-three years inside the pharmaceutical industry sat down with two independent researchers and explained one thing.

Not a blogger. Not a supplement company. Someone who was in the room where the decisions got made.

What he explains is why the compound that addresses what actually damages arteries never reaches your doctor's checklist.

He is not selling it. He is explaining why you have never heard its name.

P.S. He has nothing to sell you and no product to defend. That is the entire reason this is worth ten minutes. Start at the beginning

My numbers line up with a 1991 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. In that trial, 18 people with type 2 diabetes took psyllium right before breakfast and dinner. Their peak rise was 14% lower at breakfast and 20% lower at dinner than with a placebo.

But lunch held the biggest surprise.

They took no fiber before lunch at all… and their rise was still 31% smaller.

Researchers have also pooled years of studies on psyllium taken before meals. Those reviews found it may lower fasting blood sugar and A1c over time, with the biggest effect in people whose numbers started highest.

My doctor never mentioned this.

Psyllium costs a few dollars a tub, and it sits on the drugstore shelf right next to the laxatives. They told me to give up toast for good, and the whole time a two-minute habit may have let me keep it.

By the way, the drink tastes like almost nothing. The texture is the hard part, so stir fast and drink it before it thickens.

So here’s the fine print. My test was one person on two mornings, and the effect in studies is modest. Your number may drop more, less, or not at all.

⚡ Your mission this week

Spoon before the carbs

⏱ 2 minutes

1

Mix one teaspoon

Stir one teaspoon of plain psyllium husk into a full 8 oz glass of water. Drink it right away, before it turns thick.

2

Wait 15 minutes, then eat

Eat your usual carb meal exactly as you love it. Toast, rice, pasta, all of it stays on the plate.

3

Give your meds space

Psyllium can slow how your body absorbs medication, so keep the two at least 1 to 2 hours apart.

🎯 Your first win

Drink one glass before your favorite carb breakfast this week, then eat that breakfast without changing a thing.

Do

Drink a full glass of water with every spoonful.

Start with one teaspoon and let your gut get used to it.

Don’t

Swallow it dry or with a tiny sip of water.

Take it within 1 to 2 hours of your medication.

Anyway, my friend Rosa tried this before her lunchtime rice bowl for a week.

She said the first glass felt like drinking wet sand. By day three, she mixed it fast, drank it in ten seconds, and stopped making faces.

Her monitor showed a smaller bump on four of five days.

And she stopped hunting for chips at 3 p.m., which fits a study where psyllium before a meal left people less hungry.

Rosa still eats the rice, every grain of it.

That’s the whole point.

🔬 Where this comes from: Pastors et al., American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (1991), a randomized crossover trial in 18 adults with type 2 diabetes: psyllium taken right before meals cut the peak glucose rise by 14% at breakfast and 20% at dinner, with a 31% smaller rise at lunch. Gibb et al., American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2015), meta-analyses linking pre-meal psyllium to lower fasting glucose and A1c. Rigaud et al., European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (1998), on psyllium and lower hunger after a meal. Jackie’s numbers come from her own glucose monitor and are one person’s result, not a study.

They said give up the toast.
I added a spoon instead.
